Choosing a career in life is the biggest decision for any student or youth. Often, many questions arise in our mind after completing school or college. That is, which career path would be better for me? In which job will I be satisfied? And most importantly, will I be able to sustain myself in the long run on the path I have chosen? Choosing a career is not only a means of earning money, but it also becomes a big part of life. If you choose work you are not interested in, then slowly, it will become boring and unsatisfactory.
Thus, ask yourself, firstly, do I love working with people, or do I work better alone? Do I feel good doing creative works, or am I more interested in technical work? The activities you enjoy most can be a sign of your career direction.
Find your skills and strengths.
Every human being has some special abilities. Some people have great communication skills, while others can be good at mathematics and reasoning. Similarly, some love teamwork, while others are adept at research and development (R&D).
You should calculate your skills honestly and think about the studies or experience you have learned till today, which hard skills, for example, computer accounting or designing, or which soft skills, for example, leadership, communication skills, and problem-solving, you developed throughout your studies and experience.
You’re good to go; the right career will be the combination of your skills and interests.
Look at your personality:
The impact of your personality on your career selection is big. Some people are good for a leadership role, while others can work better after getting instructions.
Similarly, someone can be more comfortable in fieldwork, while someone else loves to work in an office space. So ask yourself, do I perform better in the team, or does loving to work freely and alone make me more convenient?
It is extremely important to understand what type of environment your personality is suitable for so that you will not regret or be dissatisfied after choosing your career path.
How long should I study, and what skills should I acquire for this career?
Often in the field I am interested in, to reach the top, I need a special degree or skill set. For example, an MBBS is mandatory to become a doctor, and an LLB is needed to become an advocate and to pursue a career in the IT field or engineering.
There is a need for technical skills. So it is extremely important to calculate the amount of study or skill set, or investment, you need to pursue a career in your interest. If you have this much time and this much facility, then this could be your good-to-go career.
To know the future and opportunities in a career
While looking at interest and skill set, we should also make sure to consider what the future of that particular career is. If a career future is dark or there is a possibility of fewer jobs in that particular career, then no one, not even a single student, will ever want to choose that career. So, before selecting any career, it is very mandatory to do research for the upcoming 5 to 10 years of that particular career to see what the possibilities of upcoming jobs and opportunities are in that career.
Along with that, you also have to think, is there a need to change your city or your country to get a better opportunity, and if yes, then are you ready to do so?
The selection of a career should not be taken quickly. This should be a very calculated step in which there should be a balance of skill set, personality, education, and future possibility of career. When you answer these five questions for yourself honestly, then you can clearly see your professional life’s direction. Choosing the right career not only gives you financial support. In fact, it will bring satisfaction and happiness to your life.
