How to Start Studying When You Don’t Feel Like It

There comes a time in every student’s life when they do not feel like studying the books. Sometimes they feel sleepy, sometimes mobile or social media attracts them, and sometimes they feel that there is no use of studying. But the truth is that problems increase by avoiding studies. Whether the exam is near or there is a big goal in front of you, it is important to start studying. The question is that when one does not feel like studying, how to motivate oneself and how to start.

Start with small steps

Start with small steps

Often, we think that we will have to study for hours at a stretch. This thought itself seems overwhelming and we postpone starting. It is better that you take small steps. For example, say, “I will study for only 10 minutes.” When you sit and start studying for 10 minutes, you will gradually start getting interested and the time will increase automatically.

Change the environment

Change the environment

One of the reasons for not feeling like studying is the wrong environment. If you try to study while lying on the bed, you will fall asleep. If there is noise around, your attention will be diverted. Therefore, choose a quiet and clean place to study. Sit on a table-chair, keep the mobile away and keep important books and notebooks in front of you. When the environment is conducive to study, then the mind will also gradually start getting interested in studying.

Make studies interesting

Remember, if you find the subject boring, then studying will seem difficult. In such a situation, try to make studies interesting. You can make notes with a colored pen and prepare a mind map or flow chart. You can also understand the subject well by teaching a friend. Remember, the more fun studying becomes, the more you will be interested in it.

Set goals and rewards

Set goals and rewards

A good way to motivate yourself to study is to set goals and rewards. For example, say, “If I read 5 pages today, I will treat myself to chocolate,” or “I will watch an episode of my favourite series after completing a chapter.” When you associate study with a reward, the brain gets motivated and it becomes easier to start.

Avoid procrastination

Many times we think, “I will start studying tomorrow” or “I will study a little later.” But this tomorrow never comes. If you really want to start studying, then do not wait for the “right time.” Just pick up the book immediately and start reading the first page. The beginning may be small, but this small beginning turns into a big study later on.

Remind yourself why you are studying

Remind yourself why you are studying

Whenever you don’t feel like studying, ask yourself, “Why am I studying this?” Your goal may be to score good marks in exams, pass a competitive exam or fulfill a big dream in life. When you remember your ‘why,’ you will understand the need to study and will be able to focus on it. Studying without a goal seems like a burden, but with a goal, it becomes an inspiration.

Take care of your mind and body

Sometimes lack of interest in studies is due to fatigue, lack of sleep or an unhealthy body. So get enough sleep, eat healthy food and do light exercises in between. A fresh and energetic body is essential for studies. If the mind is fresh, it will be easy to start studying.

Disinterest in studies is a common problem, but the ways to avoid it are also simple. Start by taking small steps, create the right study environment and make the subject interesting and motivating for yourself with goals and rewards. The most important thing is not to consider studies as a burden but to consider it a path to reach your dreams. Remember, the beginning is always difficult, but once you start studying, the path ahead will become easier.
